Why Group Training Beats Going It Alone When the Clocks Go Back

The clocks go back on 25 October. By Monday morning, the session you used to do in daylight is now in the dark.

If you train outside, you already know this moment. It is the point in the year where motivation gets tested. Not your fitness. Your willingness to get out the door.

Training on your own in the dark is a different experience. The park feels emptier. The paths feel longer. The excuses feel louder. And slowly, the sessions start to slip. One missed. Then two. Then you are indoors on a treadmill wondering what happened to the thing you actually enjoyed.

A group changes the equation.

When you train in a group, turning up is not a decision you make alone. Someone is expecting you. The session is happening whether you feel like it or not. And once you are there, the energy of the group carries you through what you would have talked yourself out of on your own.

That is not motivation. That is structure. And structure is what keeps you training through winter, not willpower.

What group training gives you in the dark months

A set time and place. No negotiating with yourself about when or where.

Other people around you. Safety in numbers, and energy you cannot generate alone.

A coach who has planned the session. You turn up, you work, you leave. No standing in the cold wondering what to do.

Accountability. Miss a session, and someone notices. That matters more than most people admit.

Variety. A good outdoor group session uses the space, the equipment, and the conditions. Winter training is not watered-down summer training. It is its own thing, and it can be brilliant.

There are groups all over London. Find one near you. Find one that runs in conditions you would not face alone. Find one that keeps going when the weather turns.

If you are in Hyde Park, come to us.

The Be Fearsome Outdoors team have been running outdoor fitness sessions in Hyde Park for over 15 years. Seven days a week. In all conditions. Rain, frost, dark, wind. We do not cancel because it is cold.

Our sessions are 60 minutes. Coached. Structured. Scalable for all fitness levels. And surrounded by people who made the same decision you did: to get out the door.

The clocks go back this month. Your training does not have to.
